Heavy-duty corrugated and composite packaging manufactured just for you

Heavy-duty packaging is ideal if you require maximum protection for your products or components during transit. At Macfarlane Packaging, we can provide both heavy-duty corrugated packaging and composite packaging that combines different materials for ultimate protection.

The heavy-duty packaging solutions we manufacture use triple-wall cardboard, solid fibreboard or a mixture of materials. This can include composite packs, which incorporate timber, foam, and barrier films to create unique packaging for your products. Many manufacturers and industrial businesses use heavy-duty packaging for bulky, high-value, and/or fragile products, parts, and equipment.

We can offer bespoke heavy-duty corrugated packaging and composite packaging suitable for various applications, customised to your requirements.

Triple Wall Cardboard Boxes

Triple wall cardboard boxes (also known as tri-wall boxes) are the most robust corrugated packaging, often used instead of wooden crates.

They can handle weights of over 100kg, are ideal for pallet and transit use, and offer excellent protection. You can also print tri-wall boxes with branding and instructions.

Environmentally friendly, they’re lighter and less bulky than timber crates, improving transit efficiency and reducing emissions. Plus, triple wall boxes can be made from recycled content, making them a great sustainable packaging choice.

Tri-Mite®

Tri-Mite is a form of corrugated cardboard, similar to triple wall cardboard. It is comparably strong, durable and lightweight. However, Tri-Mite has the advantage that it can be machined to create 45-degree angles to make very neat folds/joints.

Tri-Mite can withstand over 2.5 tonnes of pressure. It is ideal for stacking and protecting contents and can be further enhanced with RAL colours, stencilling, and an acrylic coating for water resistance. Further options include internal dividers, cradles, and foam inserts for added protection.

Lighter than timber and easier to recycle, Tri-Mite is reusable and perfect for export and industrial packaging.

Solid Fibreboard Boxes

Our versatile range of fibreboard boxes uses high-quality kraft and chip linerboard to provide exceptional strength and durability.

Solutions can be manufactured from board up to 2150 microns thick, so packaging designs can easily be tailored to your needs.

Choose from 0427 style boxes featuring hinged lids for convenient access, or opt for 0300 style packs reinforced with strong stapled joints that feature removable lids. These boxes can be manufactured to Defence Standard 81-15 – meeting stringent military specifications – but are also suitable for small and heavy components like screws, nails, nuts, and bolts. They’re fully recyclable and biodegradable, ensuring your packaging solution is environmentally friendly.

Timber Corrugated Wraps

Timber corrugated wraps protect your oversized products during transit.

Manufactured using both a sturdy timber frame and a corrugated cardboard outer, timber-frame wraps provide similar strength but with lighter weight than all timber cases.

So, whether you’re dealing with hefty machinery or delicate equipment, timber wraps ensure your shipments remain secure and protected at every stage of their journey.

Pallet Boxes

We offer a range of pallet boxes, perfect for businesses selling large products, bulk shipping multiple items, or exporting products.

With both bespoke and industry-standard sizes, you can select a pallet pack suited to your application.

Pallet boxes are available with or without pallets, in various material strengths, and heat-treated for international shipping to IPSM15 standards. Providing protection during storage and transit, our pallet boxes are a cost-effective solution and can help streamline your logistics.

FAQs about Heavy Duty Corrugate & Composite Packs

What are the benefits of using composite packs?

At Macfarlane Packaging, we recognise that there are several key benefits to using composite packaging, including the following:

  • Cost reduction through minimised returns
  • Tailored for your specific product/requirements
  • The highest level of protection in transit
  • A selection of printing options
  • Can be produced using Correx® plastic material.
What materials does heavy-duty packaging use?

Heavy-duty packaging typically uses robust materials such as corrugated cardboard, wood, metal, or plastic, ensuring durability and protection for goods during transportation and storage.

What makes cardboard heavy-duty?

Several grades of double-walled and triple-walled cardboard (characterised by multiple layers of fluting) are typically classified as heavy-duty. The weight (GSM) of the papers utilised in its production also influences the material’s strength.

What is the difference between heavy-duty cardboard and composite packaging?

Heavy-duty cardboard packaging uses only this material in its manufacture. Composite packaging, however, combines various materials to create customised protection for a particular product, component, or machinery. Typical composite packaging incorporates corrugated cardboard, foam, and timber. Widely embraced across manufacturing, medical, aerospace, and industrial sectors, composite packaging ensures a bespoke, optimised level of protection.
